Important Calculations
2011-06-19 Well, I'm continuing my black & white streak but otherwise this is a complete and utter desperation shot. But it's photography related! These notes represent my calculations for how many memory cards I'll need for my upcoming three-week Africa trip, based on how many photos I took in Hawaii last year. Turns out I'll need a lot. Happy Autumn! I took this shot about 80 minutes before the equinox. I headed to the Santa Monica Pier to get either a cool sunset or moonrise shot, since they were occurring near the same time and I heard all about how great the moon was going to look tonight.
As you may have noticed, this photo is neither the sun or the moon, but it's definitely the coolest looking shot I got from the outing.

<em>New Orleans, Day 5</em>
Today we flew from LA to LA - Louisiana to Los Angeles. Shortly after taking off Louis Armstrong International Airport, I got this shot of farms plots extending out from a river which turned out to be the LaFourche Bayou - not really a river at all but an offshoot of the Mississippi. The land use pattern reminded me of the old plantation map of the Mississippi that we saw on the tour we took on Thursday.
Converted to B&W since there wasn't much color to begin with. I've re-uploaded my last 4 iPhone daily photos that I did during the trip - they now are properly labeled and have EXIF data and all that good stuff. Stay tuned for a gallery and blog post... right after I go through these 800 photos I took :)

It rained a bit today so I headed to the Santa Monica pier around sunset, hoping for something pretty. The sunset was a bust, but I got some good shots anyhow. Deciding on my favorite was a tough call; I chose it because the composition was better than the others. I increased the exposure to give it more of a blown-out look, although it was taken 10 minutes after sunset. I like the motion blur on the 2 couples in the background.

I experimented with capturing drops tonight - it's pretty hard! I need to read up on how to do it, I think. This is the best I could do before I ran out of time tonight. It's actually vinegar being dropped into a spoon full of oil... which is sitting in water.
I'd definitely like to play with this more, but I need more stuff - like an eye dropper. Any other suggestions?

Desperation shot of two pots and two pans hanging on our new-ish pot rack. I experimented with holding the flash so that the shadows didn't overlap at all. Black and white was an obvious choice since the scene was lacking in color to begin with.
Thanks to <a href="http://mccommon.smugmug.com/">Donna</a> for the New Orleans tips! I definitely will visit the French Quarter and I hope to make it to a cemetery, but we won't have a car, so... it'll have to be close. Anyone else have ideas for me? I'll be there next week. :)

Today I got to see a planetarium show, which was fun! I don't know the last time I did that, maybe middle school? Here's a quick and dirty shot of the projector with the dome's curved lines providing the background.
I'm planning to go back - they do <a href="http://www.astro.ucla.edu/planetarium/">public shows</a> every Wednesday followed by telescope viewing. Yay space!

Had a great time today seeing a movie, eating and walking around downtown Santa Monica with my wife. We poked our heads into various buildings along Ocean Avenue, including this one called Pacific Plaza. According to <a href="http://www.apartmentratings.com/rate/CA-Santa-Monica-Pacific-Plaza-Towers.html">apartmentratings.com</a> the place is a dump, but I thought this symmetrical view was neat.
I actually took a really cool iPhone panorama of the inside but there are some major ghosting artifacts, so I decided it wasn't worthy of the One/Day Project. It's a cool scene though - I might go back and shoot it with my SLR.
