Kubrick Lenses
2013-01-13
The wife and I headed to LACMA today to check out the amazingly well-done exhibition on Stanley Kubrick. If you care at Kubrick's works at all and are anywhere near LACMA, I suggest you pay it a visit - you have until the end of June!
Each major film had it's own section and there were some really neat props, such as the baby at the end of 2001 (it's now my Facebook profile photo).
This photo is of the two long display cases containing lenses used by Kubrick. It was fascinating to see how they changed over the years, and how they were modified to fit Kubrick's demands. The coolest, of course, was the "candlelight lens" used in Barry Lyndon, originally developed for NASA. It weighs in at a whopping f/.07!
For the shot, I just put my phone at the end of one of the display cases and lined it up to be more-or-less symmetrical. In the background on the wall, you can see a film camera with a flash - an example of the camera that Kubrick used to get his career started at Life magazine, before filmmaking.
