Road Closed Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Now I hate to be a spoil sport, but I think this sign might be fake. The reason is because it's pretty far from the road - like 30 feet away. It's also in remarkably good condition for a painted sign that sat just inches above molten rock. Anyone know the true story on this?

on December 7, 2010I am suspicious as well - I would expect that anything even remotely flammable would pretty quickly burn to a cinder when engulfed in molten rock. Hence, that wooden pole would be a tiny little lump of charcoal and I would guess the metal making up the sign would melt. Looks fake to me. Makes a great photo though. :D
