New Orleans | Feb 2011

Red Lafayette Cemetery No. 1 The was the only red tomb I saw in either of the cemeteries I visited. You can see that there used to be a marble slab in front of the brick. The slab would have listed the names of the deceased. When a new person died, they'd take off the slab and break down the brick so they could put the new coffin in, then rebuild the brick wall and put the slab back. If room was needed, the bones of the oldest body would be left under the vault, and their coffin would be removed.
