Tonight I tossed my camera at my neighbor's Christmas lights to get this abstract. The blue streaks are icicle lights, and the yellow is a porch light that was next to them. I was inspired after seeing a video about it on Wired - http://www.wired.com/video/how-to-take-a-cameratoss-photo/51428907001. There's also a blog with lots of instructions - http://cameratoss.blogspot.com.
Basically you set your camera for a long exposure - like 1 second - and throw it in the air as the shutter opens. I used a self-timer of 2 seconds so I could get a good toss. To quell my paranoia about dropping it, I used a lanyard to tie it to my wrist, and caught it that way - it worked pretty well. About 5/30 shots turned out decently, but this was the most interesting pattern to me. I assume this goes without saying, but just in case: I used my compact, not my SLR :)
